One of the most controversial and important characters in the Occult world, specifically Theosophy, Annie Besant is a very interesting and intriguing person. Annie had a difficult childhood and what seemed to be an even more difficult marriage. During her marriage, she had decided to try and commit suicide. With poison in her hand, ready to drink, she heard a voice speak "O coward, coward, who used to dream of martyrdom and cannot stand a few years of woe." This was before her involvement with the Unseen world. She immediately threw out the poison and apparently never forgot that voice. She ended up leaving her husband but because of stern laws at the time, she could not divorce him, so she kept her last name Besant. Going from a devout Christian, to an atheist and social reformer, Besant had experience in multiple subjects of thought. After years of still feeling a deep void within herself, she sat alone in darkness, trying to find existence of the Soul, when at once she heard a voice say to her that she shall not worry and she will soon find the Light she desired. Less than a few weeks after that, she was handed two textbook-size books to “review” for a friend of hers. This two books happened to be The Secret Doctrine by Blavatsky. The rest is history. So much controversy comes to Besant because at one point while she was president of the Theosophical Society, she had let a pedophile back into the Society after he was kicked out. We all know who that is. If there is anything I got wrong in this, I am not an expert on Besant nor Theosophy and please correct me with accurate information.
